Baking soda and vinegar eruption
SAFETY FIRST! This experiment involves an acid which may irritate your eyes and skin. Wear gloves, do this experiment outside and do not put the mixture in your eyes or mouth.
This experiment allows you to make an eruption of foam from a cup or jar. This happens because o the way acids and bases react. Vinegar is an acid and baking soda is a base. Carbon dioxide gas produced during this reaction causes the bubbles and foam
Equipment
2 tablespoons baking soda
3 tablespoons vinegar
1 tablespoon liquid dish soap
¼ cup warm water
Large tray
Small plastic bottle or jar
Optional - 2 drops food colouring
Method
Combine baking soda, dishsoap and water inside the bottle. Add food colouring if using.
Mix gently until all the ingredients have combined
Take the bottle and tray outside and put the bottle in the tray
Add vinegar to start the reaction
Note: the more vinegar and baking soda you add, the more foam will be produced. Feel free to add more vinegar if needed (within reason!)
