Build a mini catapult

This little catapult allows you to launch small objects by storing and releasing potential energy. It also uses Newton’s first law to launch the projectile by creating a force on the spoon that pushes on the projectile, launching it into the air.

Equipment

  • Craft popsicle sticks

  • Rubber bands

  • Plastic spoon

  • Small projectiles that fit in the spoon

Method

  1. Make a stack of 7 craft popsicle sticks

  2. Secure them together with a rubber band at each end

  3. Make a stack of two craft sticks

  4. Secure the two sticks together with a rubber band at one end

  5. Pull the two sticks apart and wedge the stack of 7 sticks between them

  6. Secure the plastic spoon to the upper stick with the handle pointing towards the rubber band

  7. To launch: place projectile in spoon, push down and release.
