Make a bouncy egg
This simple experiment allows you to make an egg that holds it’s shape without it’s shell. This experiment works by soaking an egg in vinegar. The shell dissolves in the vinegar, leaving the yolk and egg white held together by the egg’s membrane. You may also notice that the egg grows in size during this experiment. This is because the egg soaks up water when soaking in the vinegar.
Equipment
A glass jar, cup or container
One egg
Vinegar (enough to fill the container and cover the egg)
Food colouring (optional)
Stirring rod or small spoon (if using food colouring)
Method
Place the egg in the glass container
Fill the container with enough vinegar to completely cover the egg
If using food colouring, add 8-10 drops to the vinegar and stir
Leave the egg for 24 hours
If the egg is not translucent or if there are any bits of shell left, leave for another 24 hours
Remove and rinse the egg then dry it with a paper towel
Squeeze the egg gently
Test how well the egg bounces. Do this outside especially if using food colouring or the egg may stain surfaces
